killing me sweetly

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Call us cliché, but at the end of a long work week, our guilty pleasures always include a little LMN {that’s Lifetime Movie Network for those who possess a Y chromosome}, a beverage of the alcoholic variety and sweets. What can we say? Something saccharine +  the sauce is always a winning combination. Which is why it didn’t take us long to fall in love with Sugar Knife – the newest addition to our lineup of sweets here at Oxford Hall. This Oakland-based confectioner lives and dies by sugar and booze, infusing them into traditional treats like marshmallows and brittle to make something h*lla delicious {when in Oakland…}.

Besides being just plain awesome, owners Josh and Jenna make all of Sugar Knife’s goodies by hand in small batches and use only the finest ingredients. That means absolutely no preservatives {as if they’d last long enough to need them}, food dyes or other scary sounding acronyms or otherwise unpronounceable words. They also have a certain je ne sais quois when it comes to naming their concoctions – which leads to playful monikers like “Lemonage à Trois” and “You Fancy, Huh?.”  The result is – well, something you’re going to need to taste. Trust us.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to our sample sale last weekend – what a whirlwind of a Saturday! If you didn’t make it out {or you just want to shop some more V&I deals} please do join us this weekend, 12/15 and 12/16, for the final weekend of our sale! We will be adding more styles that will all be up to 50% off! That means two presents for yourself for every one you find for someone else {or is our math wrong}?

To boot, we’ll also be hosting a Maison Bouche chocolate tasting this Saturday, 12/15! All purchases from our favorite Oakland-based chocolatier will be 10% off and we have stocked up on all of her signature holiday creations. Trust us when we say that her milk chocolate Mint Candy Cane bar makes up for the hassle of finding a parking space in downtown Berkeley {and, coincidentally, you can finish the whole bar in the time is takes you to walk back to said car read: it’s up and down delicious}.

See you there!

a cupcake a day

Red velvet cake has always been a sort of a mystery to us. Without enough cocoa to truly qualify as a chocolate cake but with most recipes suggesting enough food coloring to turn your hands/measuring spoons/and any other porous kitchen surface they touch red for a week, it is ill-defined at best. Describing the flavor is tantamount to proclaiming Schrodinger’s cat dead. {Or alive, for that matter.} The buttermilk lends it a tang, the cocoa a mild richness and – well, that’s about it. Well, that is until you get to the matter of the icing, because as most good southern recipes recommend, it is topped with a hearty dollop of cream cheese frosting, which would make just about everything taste like rainbows {read: delicious}.

But enough’s enough. It’s red. It involves cream cheese frosting. And it is re-friggin-diculously good. We know because we’re eating some as  we type – freshly baked for a coworker’s birthday celebration today. And while we can’t blog you a cupcake, we can blog you our beloved Smitten Kitchen recipe, the one without which all of our red velvet dreams would have withered up and died, so you can make some for yourself. Because these ones are ours – all ours. OK?
